Predator Pro Billiard Series to host three World Championships at Claudelands
The world’s greatest pool players, including legendary Shane Van Boening,
are heading to Hamilton, New Zealand, for the most prestigious events in cue
sports. The World Pool Association (WPA) has announced that Hamilton will
host the WPA Men’s World 8-Ball Championship, the WPA Women’s World 9-Ball Championship, and the WPA Junior World 10-Ball Championship from 2-8 September, 2024.
Reigning champion Shane Van Boening, considered the greatest of all time
and often compared to Ronnie O’Sullivan in snooker, will defend his title
against a formidable lineup. Van Boening's prominence extends beyond the
pool world, having been featured twice on the US current affairs show, 60
Minutes. What makes him even more remarkable, is he was born deaf. World
number one Chieh Yu Chou will also defend her title in the women’s
championship, promising a week of intense competition and world-class
pool.
The Predator WPA Junior World Championships will see young talents
compete in three divisions: Girls under 19, Boys under 17, and Boys under 19, all vying for the title in 10-Ball. These events will take place at the awardwinning Claudelands Events Centre, providing a top-tier venue for the
championships.
“We are thrilled to bring the Predator Pro Billiard Series to New Zealand,
offering fans an unforgettable week of world-class pool action,” said PBS
Event Manager Vincent Rochefort. “With three tournaments and a stellar
roster of players, the stage is set for a truly spectacular week. We look
forward to welcoming players, fans, and enthusiasts to Hamilton for what
promises to be an exhilarating event.”
Securing the World Championships is a significant legacy of NZ snooker great Dene O'Kane, who recently passed away. Dene, along with Massé Club General Manager Bernie Endres, played a crucial role in bringing these
prestigious events to New Zealand. Bernie Endres stated, “Over the past 30
years, Massé has worked to grow the sport, particularly among women and
junior players. Partnering with the Predator Pro Billiard Series to host these
World Championship events aligns perfectly with our goals and will elevate
the sport in this country.”
Shaun Singh, President of the World Pool Association, remarked, “The World
Pool Association eagerly anticipates the Men’s World 8-Ball Championship,
the Women’s World 9-Ball Championship, and the World Junior Championship in New Zealand. These events showcase the pinnacle of skill and dedication in our sport and serve as inspiration for aspiring players worldwide. We extend our warmest wishes to all participants and eagerly await the exhilarating displays of athleticism and sportsmanship that will captivate audiences globally.”
