Matariki Flavours Take Centre Stage at the Waikato Food Show
This July, the Waikato Food Show is celebrating the flavours, people and stories that make food in Aotearoa special, with a line-up of local and national chefs and foodie personalities taking to the stage at Claudelands Events Centre 11th & 12th July.
Held during Matariki weekend, this year's line-up embraces the values of connection, sharing food, celebrating the harvest and gathering around the table. The Heathcotes Cooking theatre will host more than ten live cooking demonstrations across the weekend.
A highlight of the Matariki-themed programme is chef and content creator Kia Kanuta, who will take the stage in the Heathcotes Kitchen Theatre on Sunday. Using seasonal fish wrapped in delicate parcels with nasturtium and finished with a kawakawa emulsion, Kia will showcase indigenous ingredients and sustainable cooking techniques that honour both tradition and the natural abundance of Aotearoa. His session celebrates the connection between people, place and food that sits at the heart of Matariki.
Beloved food writer and Nourish editor Vicki Ravlich-Horan will share her passion for local flavours and seasonal cooking, while award-winning restaurateurs Lisa Quarrie and Dan Lawrence from Hayes Common will demonstrate how to create vibrant dishes using locally sourced seasonal ingredients.
Hamilton's dining scene will also be represented by award winning chefs Logan Murray from Thyme Square and Mat McLean from Palate Restaurant, bringing restaurant-quality inspiration to home cooks looking to elevate their everyday meals.
Visitors can also learn from some of New Zealand's most recognisable culinary personalities, including food legend Allyson Gofton, Pepper & Me founder Cherie Metcalfe, Volare owner and baker Ryan Simmons, Garden of Eden Cakes founder Eden McPhillips and renowned chef Simon Gault. Their demonstrations promise everything from comforting family favourites and creative leftover solutions to decadent treats and baking inspiration.
"The Heathcotes Cooking Theatre has always been one of the most popular attractions at the Waikato Food Show because it brings together the people behind the food we love," says Event Director Ammie Hardie.
"This year we're particularly excited to celebrate Matariki through food and storytelling, while also showcasing the incredible talent we have right here in the Waikato. From local restaurant favourites to nationally recognised food personalities, there is something for every home cook to enjoy."
The Waikato Food Show returns to Claudelands Events Centre on 11 and 12 July, featuring live cooking demonstrations, interactive masterclasses, food trucks, tastings and more than 100 exhibitors. It is the region's premier celebration of food, drink and culinary creativity.
