The Tainui Waka Primary School Kapa Haka Committee have held 7 regional competitions since 2004, providing an opportunity for tamariki to unite as Tainui waka, Tainui tangata and to participate in an event where they are able to express their language and showcase their culture and heritage through song and dance being the medium of Kapa Haka
The committee’s overarching objective is to “promote, foster, develop and encourage participation in Māori Performing Arts and associated Māori Cultural art forms; in particular Kapa Haka at Primary and Intermediate levels”.
The 2016 Tainui Waka Primary school regional competition will see 16 Kura from throughout the rohe of Tainui vie for one of 6 opportunities to represent Tainui waka at the National Primary School Kapa Haka competition to be held in Hastings in 2017. On 15 October 2016, 16 Kura comprising of 640 tamariki will take the stage throughout the 12hr event. 18 Judges will critique and scrutinize each performance across 7 aggregate and 6 non-aggregate disciplines.
